AC312 Accounting Systems and Processes
DESCRIPTION
Accounting information systems are the backbone of business around the world. A business at some point will tailor its accounting information system to the needs of its internal and external users. This unit examines the processes and theories to this end including analysis of database systems, analysis of internal controls, accounting information system design and development, computer-based audits, and other contemporary issues. Practical applications of these issues are enhanced with the use of Quickbooks to introduce students to problem solving in client situations. The unit focuses on the three major transaction processing cycles of general ledger/reporting cycle, revenue cycle and expenditure cycle.

- An overview of accounting information systems, transaction processing and enterprise resource planning systems
- Systems documentation techniques and relational databases
- Computer fraud, computer fraud and abuse techniques
- Control and accounting information systems, controls for information security
- Confidentiality and privacy controls, processing integrity and availability controls
- Auditing computer-based information systems, the revenue cycle: Sales to cash collections
- The expenditure cycle: Purchasing to cash disbursements, the production cycle
- The human resources management and payroll cycle, general ledger, and reporting system
- Database design using the REA data model, implementing an REA model in a relational database
- Introduction to systems development and systems analysis, AIS development strategies
- Systems design, implementation, and operation
